The CabinMan Confronts Paranoid America

Please – if you have the time this week – take a look at the attached link to an essay written by Richard Hofstadter, one of America’s preeminent historians from the 20th Century.  It is required reading for anyone surprised by the events in Delaware last week.  I know Chris Coons – he is a friend and a fine candidate in his own right – but what happened to Mike Castle lays bare for all to see that moderation has no home in the Republican Party.

For those who relish burning down villages in order to save them, I give you today’s dysfunctional Republican Party, aka the Tea Party Express.  John Boehner and Mitch McConnell have inherited the wind: they stood by as Jim DeMint went Col. Kurtz on them and hijacked the GOP and took it into the Heart of Darkness.

As for Sarah Palin, I stand by my post-Republican Convention assessment from 2008: she is the exploding dye-pack of GOP electioneering.  Just when the giddy accomplices are in the getaway car with a bag of loot: tick, tick, tick…

I know that reasonable people can disagree, but we have far more in common than what divides us.  I hope you will glean something deeper from this essay written almost 50 years ago.
